The oldest naturalistic representations of the Buddha dated from 500 years after his lifetime. Thus the image of Gautama represents an ideal spiritual emanation of the Buddha, through which embodies the metaphysical qualities that inspire us to live in an enlightened mental state (samadhi). As shown in this Southeast Asian bronze, the princely Gautama Buddha appears in a contemplative expression, his round face is clearly defined as a handsome youth, with large eyes framed by extended arched eyebrows, a pronounced nose bridge adjacent to a pair of bow-shaped lips, elongated earlobes and hair reaching up high that resembles a stupa. Well cast, with spots of oxidation in rich burgundy red, it's an inspirational centerpiece radiates with spiritual essence. The patinated bronze head is mounted on a circular canopy, which in turn firmly seated on a beautifully lacquered wood base.
