This lustrous rich colored Foo Dog pair reflects a lengthy Sancai / Wucai technique in use since the Tang dynasty (618-907). With its introduction to Chinese art in connection with Buddhism, it has taken various fanciful forms. They represent the vigorous spirit of the traditional Buddhist guardian lions. Their massive lion heads are staring forward, ears extended like horns from finely modeled spiraled curl manes, large opened jaws baring teeth and tongues. In addition to these fine details, the pair are lyrically matching in symmetrical arrangements, which accentuates the natural beauty and charms of the pair, and enhanced the sculptural playfulness in these auspicious Feng Shui figurines.
