The horse is a noble creature of speed, grandeur and perseverance. It represents the seventh of twelve terrestrial branches in the Chinese zodiac, and classed under the element of fire, and corresponding to the south in the art of Feng Shui.
An ingenious conception and stylized carving of a Chinese recumbent horse, highly expressive and impeccably finished. Crouching on its side with legs bent inward, her powerful head turned and looking up with a snarl, finely engraved mane with swirling hairlines spilling down its shoulders, bushy tail splits in two thrown across her hind legs, forming a carved-through loop that lends the piece a graceful movement, and a suppleness of the essential classicality of the Ming style. Heavy in weight, the large and ebullient mutton fat jade boulder 羊脂玉石 is subjacent in translucency and resinous in luster. In spite of its apparent old age, the jade horse has no cracks or chips but a few hairlines. There is a small spot of magnesium iron rust to the horseback, which barely perturbs the fine artistry of this scholar masterpiece.
