A highly polished and stained tight-grain rosewood statue functionally designed as a candleholder, expertly carved in apparent simplicity with fluid contours. The figure depicts a Taoist immortal joyously holding a bat near to his chest, and a freshly harvested budding lotus flipping across his shoulder (symbols of saintly good fortune). With one foot forward in movement, his smiling face is open with inlaid teeth and gleaming eyes. The carving reveals the essence of Zen in a lively whimsical form. This early 20th-century depiction of the happy Taoist sage is in very good condition.
