Characteristic Features of the Heian (794-1142) style Bodhisattva. Carved in gorgeous brown sandalwood, this jewel-like Bodhisattva of Wisdom Monju Bosatsu has a voluminous torso, with winding scarves drape encompassing the figure, around both arms over the shoulders. He is seated in dhyana asana above a double-lotus on a circular plinth, delicately holding a lotus stalk with three fingers. His right hand turned upward in vitarka mudra in a teaching gesture, eyes down cast in a benign meditative expression, detailed with armlets, bangles, pleated dhoti, reminiscent of traditional Esoteric Buddhas in Japan. The figure and lotus seat are carved in separate blocks and seamlessly joined together. Two minor nicks were found in the front rim, otherwise in excellent condition.
