Heavily gilded and richly ornamented garments, with armbands, bracelets and anklets, flames rise up on the robe, and at the shoulders and lower section of the high crown; his hands are holding a large singing bowl, a gesture unique to Thai iconography. The Buddha’s austere countenance seems to smolder and glow, highlighting the Ayutthaya royal attire of the Siamese kingdom that existed from 1350 to 1767-- when an independent tradition arose that defined Thai art styles; which continued through the Rattanakosin dynasty to this day. The power of this classic Rattanakosin Buddha is in its imperturbable spiritual quality, in which the weathered surface of the gilded bronze appears suffused with the glow of inner light. This statue is an instrument for perfect inner bliss.
