Amida Nyorai, the Buddha of Infinite Light, is venerated as the savior of all sentience. In its union of power and serenity, this late seventeenth Amida Nyorai is in the style of the 12th-13th century. The resplendent depiction shows the Buddha of Infinite Light in a youthful countenance, his eyes downcast and hands joined in the Dhyani meditation mudra. The figure and pedestal are carved from hollowed-out wood in the Yosegi-Zukuri 寄木造 technique, assembled in joined blocks, coated with gesso, then lacquered and gilded in gold. The pedestal consists of four stacked hexagonal banisters, with a dragon prowling through clouds at the base, surmounted by an elaborate double-lotus throne. The youthful Amida is detailed with crystal eye inserts, two semi-precious stone inlays on his urna and ushnisha, and a leaf-shaped nimbus behind him; amid the glittering splendor, the Buddha is dressed in symmetric monk robes, seated upright that fits into a rectangular socket on the lotus pedestal, so apparently all parts belong to the same original set. Beyond this artistic excellence, the natural patina, and a few slight imperfections due to age, this centuries-old Amida Nyorai evokes the passage of time and creates a sense of infinite luminous consciousness.
