This late 19th to early 20th-century Chinese wood shrine depicting the Buddha Shakyamuni as the child Siddhartha. He is bedecked in sumptuous red and black lacquer, burnished with copper red gold, dressed in a Chinese child's apron, with his left hand pointing upward and right hand pointing downward, his mouth smilingly opened like that he is proclaiming the famous saying: "Under Heaven and above the earth I exist." Without equivocation, the home shrine is rendered with a deep sense of reverence. The hand-carved "China" provincial mark indicated that the shrine is one-of-a-kind carving, possibly transported to the U.S. in the 1930s.
