Fudo Myoo represents the awakening of the Bodhicitta 菩提心, the commencement of the spiritual quest, and the beginning of compassion for all sentient beings. He is the principal deity of the Five Kings of Light, the Buddhist divinity of wisdom fire called upon as a valiant protector in dangerous times. In his fierce appearance, this votive carving of the Immovable Buddha is engulfed in wisdom fire inside a provincial old wood zushi. To lead men to enlightenment, the Angry Buddha is holding a vajra-hilt sword that cuts through negative emotions and a chain that binds men to willful ignorance. Fudo Myoo is the Buddha Vairocana's wrathful manifestation, the Buddhist faith's guardian and the Conqueror of Three Poisons. Despite its small size, this votive Warrior Buddha's stance is anchored with unwavering intensity and sweeping with force. The charms between the intricate artistry and the power and presence of the miniature deity make this century-old small zushi highly compelling.
