Minor imperfection, overall in good condition
A fine lacquered wood carving of Honen Shonin, founder of the independent branch of Pure Land Buddhism (Jodo-shu 浄土宗). The old Zen master standing above a gilded lotus pedestal, his eyes downcast in a meditative gaze, hands folded near his chest in prayer. Honored as Enko Daishi 円光大師, the keenly observed figure of the founder of Jodo Shinshu emits a spiritual presence that enlivened the Seventh Patriarch. Well carved and mellowed by incense smoke from worship, with Zen aesthetics' reminiscence. Despite over a century passing, the statue is well preserved, with only a few dints and minor gilt yellowing from devotional incense rituals.
