Originating in Indian mythology as Kubera, the Guardian of the North, Bishamonten 毘沙門天 is widely worshiped as the God of Wealth and celebrated as an independent deity with numerous temples throughout Japan since the eighth century. Dressed in an elaborate full suit of armor over a twirling robe, with two large wind-blown sleeves like wings to his arms, Bishamonten is wearing warrior armors and high boots, with a sinuous flowing robe running down to the back that accentuated the deity's dynamic and dignified expression. He holds a (replacement) weapon in his right hand and his left hand a stupa. The God of Wealth stands legs firmly apart, with gravity weighing on his left, trampling above a chubby demon on a protruding cliff. The statue is masterfully sculpted using the Ichiboku-zukuri (single-block) technique with concealed Sumi inscriptions under the wood pedestal. The distinctive Muromachi-style carving dates no later than the early Edo era.
