While already assured of Buddhahood, Kannon remains in this world to comfort suffering sentient beings. Perhaps because of the maternal, feminine traits and gentle expressions, statues of Kannon inspire a greater affection in Japan than do any other Buddhist figures. Cast with exceptional skill in heavy bronze, lacquered in black with a rich surface texture and patina of age; Realistic and beautifully rendered, the simple form of the gentle Goddess is appealing in its archaic purity. Her eyes downcast in contemplation, bared feet, and hands holding a wisdom pearl, her sumptuous robe flows along pronounce outlines and defined supple symmetry. The style and proportions point to an earlier date, possibly older than the Edo period assessment.
