Eight Immortals Medicine Man 八仙

Circa: Late Qing Dynasty, 19th - early 20th Century

Minor cracks, aged, good condition!

Vigorously hand-carved with silver wire inlays embedded in dense rosewood or ebony, depicting Li Tieguai, a revered Taoist deity known as the Medicine Man and a master of Qigong (氣功). Depicted with a scraggly beard, headband, crutch, and a rolled-up mat alongside a lotus leaf hat, he exudes wisdom and resilience. With a bird by his side and a bat symbolizing good fortune in hand, his expression reflects both strength and compassion for the sick, offering them healing through his special medicine. Note that his ability to exhale his soul is illustrated in the rolling cloud on his left shoulder, which was once converted to a light fixture holder. Despite a couple of thin crack lines on his left, the superb rendering of the immortal's dynamic character stays lively and defined, and the carved-through figure is in firm and good condition. This antique carving is a testament to the artistry of the late Qing period.
