Antique Chinese Ming Bronze Censer

Incense Burner 云谷香炉

Rectangular Caldron

Circa: Qing Dynasty, 18-19th Century
H 6.75 in. (17cm), W 6 in. (15cm), D 3.5 in. (9cm)

Condition: excellent!

By its design and artistry, this well-cast rectangular incense burner is a remarkable find. It has a rectangular opening gradually morphs into a soft, round-edged censer, supported on four legs in the form of finely modeled Taotie monster masks (饕餮). Ten bats (symbol of good fortune) in low relief are on the front and back panels, two outward-flanking archaic dragon handles on two sides, and a whittled cloud lid topped with a dragon head finial. The bronze has a smooth, natural patina mottled with deep copper-brown oxidation. There is a seal mark in two crisp ancient Chinese logograph characters, Yun-Gu (云谷 Cloud Valley). This is a highly collectible 18th-19th century Qing bronze censer in excellent condition.
