Historically regarded as one of the most accomplished sages in classical Chinese literature, Su Shi 蘇軾 (Toba in Japanese) was an 11th-century Chinese statesman, calligrapher, poet, and painter of the Song Dynasty. His cultural and philosophical influence rivaled that of philosophers like Mencius and Zhuangzi. Accused of intrigue by the emperor, he went into exile, exemplifying the dignified and free spirit of a wise man cherished in Chinese Buddhist and Taoist traditions. This Qing bronze statue that also serving as an incense burner, portrays Su Shi wandering on a mule. It is an exceptional prototype reflecting the artistic style of the era. The sculpture depicts Su Shi with a serene and expressive face, while the mule's acute gesture and details highlight the noble sage's melancholy disposition.
