Jade was prized for its hardness, durability, its subtle, translucent colors and musical qualities. In particular, its mythical attribute associated with immortality, which encompassed the protective quality believed to guard its owner against harm. As jade symbolizes harmony, virtue, beauty; the ancient Chinese considered jade the most precious and beautiful natural material.
Artisans have created chimes, xylophones, and gongs from melodically resonant jade. These were instruments to produce “heavenly” tones for sacrificial and ritual practices. Jade congs 琮 of various sizes and shapes were found in the Hongshan and Liangzhu cultures dating to the early Neolithic period (c. 3500-2000 BCE). Throughout the millennia, Chinese poets have praised jade as “the concentrated essence of love”. Kings and princes wore jade as an emblem of their status, scholars and luminaries utilized jade for seals and desktop accessories. Understandably, the metaphysical and aesthetic principles of jade encompassed in its natural asymmetry inspire profound zen-like tranquility. So on a good size jade viewing stone like this one is both rare and valued by scholars and zen practitioners. The viewing stone is mounted a custom made wood pedestal. It has no damage or any kind and is in very good condition.
