This Ming Dynasty style carving shows a pugnacious figure with a fully armored thick torso and muscular arms, in a confrontational stance his right foot thrust forward, with a raised bludgeon in the left hand, large tempestuous scowling eyes meant to give pause, explicitly warning impure motives are not to be tolerated. Thus the guardian, while protecting the temple and shrine, reminding us that we are bent down by a great burden of ignorance, greed and hatred, and require right effort to become restored to our own true nature. The work is expressively carved from fruitwood, lacquered and gilded, with much of the gold remaining. On the bottom of the figure is a chamber where a rolled-up Buddhist sutra is visible, presumably from a consecrated ritual ceremony long ago.
