In elegant classic Tang attire, the Goddess of Compassion Kannon Bosatsu wears a flaming stupa high crown, eyes downward cast in meditation, with a slight smile on the benign profile of a young girl, and a large wisdom pearl in her raised left hand. Hand-carved with fine dexterity and imbued with peaceful composure, this sacred Hinoki wood carving embodies her sublime countenance of peace and tranquility. The Hinoki cypress is sacred in Japan. It is believed to maintain focus in meditation and has been used to build temples and shrines since ancient times. It is of the padma genus attributed to Amitabha Buddha, for whom Avalokiteshvara is the earthly manifestation. Aside from a few tiny discolored imperfections, the statue is an exquisite devotional carving.
