A soaring wood sculpture of Bodhidharma barefooted standing on a reed above stylized waves, holding a large staff with a fly whisk in his right hand, and in his left hand he has but one shoe. The carving is stylized along with the natural form of an elmwood, rendered in stylized forms with twists and turns that accentuating the rustic mood. Radiating in a bristly riverine flow, the eyebrows and beard have been summarily accomplished without fussiness, and in his prominent western features is an expression of irreversible determination on the remarkable face of Zen Master. As in many representations of Bodhidharma, his eyes look out intensely in a wide stare. One story about Bodhidharma recounts that he cut off his eyelids to avoid falling asleep when he was meditating; on the spot of earth where the eyelids fell, the first tea plant sprung up. Here the statue depicts the legend of his miraculous crossing of the Yangtze River on a reed after an unsuccessful audience with the Chinese emperor Emperor Liang Wudi (梁武帝, 464–549), and retired into silent meditation for nine years, then proceeded to the Shaolin Temple where later his tomb was found to contain only one shoe. Bodhidharma was also credited as the Patriarch of Zen Buddhism in Japan and known as Daruma, the wish-fulfilling deity. *Authenticity Guaranteed BuddhaMuseum.Com is specializing in temple and family worshipped Buddhist arts.
