While already assured of Buddhahood, Kannon Bosatsu remains in this world to comfort suffering sentient beings. Perhaps because of the maternal, feminine traits and gentle expressions, statues of Kannon inspire a greater affection in Japan than do any other Buddhist figures.

Cast in heavy bronze, polished to a smooth surface, and naturally aged into a darkened bronze tone. At first glance, this representation of Kannon displaying the Chinese influence which penetrated Japan in the 7th century. Here she is realistic and youthful, the face of the Compassionate Bosatsu is turning toward her left, eyes downcast in contemplative reverie, bared feet, hands clasped together holding the Lotus Sutra, with sumptuous necklace and scarves, her long robes descend in fluttering folds as if ruffled by a slight breeze; near the base a small opening concealed a tightly packed paper of consecrated prayer of sort. The straightforward simplicity of this Kannon reveals the reverence embodied in the statue.
