The name Maitreya means “loving-kindness" in Sanskrit. He is the Buddha of the future, rests in Tushita heaven until the time arrives for him to manifest on earth to lead suffering sentient beings out of the confusion of a degenerate time, presumed to be five thousand years after the appearance of the Gautama Buddha.Radiates an atmosphere of softness and warmth in gold and copper over a bronze core, this elegant bronze Maitreya Buddha is seated with both legs pendant in a benevolent pose (bhadrasana), his hands poised in the teaching gesture (dharmachakra mudra), face painted in cold gold with realistic youthful features, delicately arched eyebrows framing almond shaped double eyelids, eyes downcast in meditation, his bow-shaped mouth is smiling with a benevolent tenderness. He is attired in an Indian prince costume, and wearing a luxuriantly ornamented large crown, with incised floral motifs on the Buddha's copper tinted robe. This Nepalese Future Buddha is nearly in total resemblance of the early Tibetan style. The statue is in excellent condition.
