Inspired by the Kusunoki Masashige monument situated near the Imperial Palace in Tokyo, this meticulously sculpted bronze koro is in a class of its own. Like its predecessor in the monument, the dignified warrior is suited in samurai armor, mounting atop of a magnificent muscled steed, holding the rein to halt the horse in motion; With his head turning to the left, under a large helmet (kabuto) with a solid gold crest of Imperial Japan, his facial features somehow resembled the illustrious warrior general and three-terms minister Katsura Taro (桂 太郎, 1848–1913). In this impressive sculpture that once functioned as a censer, the superb artistry has been preserved in the original cast. Intricate details such as the gold Paulownia Seal, the face of the rider in gilded copper, and his chest plate with the inlaid emblem of a rising sun over water in gold and silver are exquisite, with gilded silver for both the horse and the figure aged with a mellow patina. This koro sculpture weighs over 15 pounds and in very good condition.
