According to the Lotus Sutra in Nichiren Buddhism, all people possess the potential to unfold an innate Buddha-nature during their own lifetimes. Here in this well-cast and elegant bronze Maitreya Buddha, of meticulously hand-chased gold and copper repoussé over solid bronze in pristine condition. The Future Buddha is seated with both legs pendant, on an up-turning lotus pedestal in a benevolent pose (bhadrasana); his hands are sensitively modeled in the Teaching Mudra (Dharmachakra), hair tied in a chignon and painted in blue, wearing a five-pointed gold crown backed by an aureole, youthful facial features with delicately arched eyebrows, downcast almond-shaped double eyelids, and a smiling bow-shaped mouth in benevolent expression. The gilded bronze is luxuriantly ornamented with corals and semi-precious stones, densely incised floral motifs on the Buddha's copper-plated high throne and princely attire, adorned with large gold earrings, necklaces, armbands, bracelets, and anklets; rose from the Buddha’s shoulders are a dharma wheel and a stupa; both are beautifully hand chiseled with great care taken in every detail. The artistry of the work is truly exceptional; conservatively dated to the early 20th century.
