Representing the transmutation of delusion into mirror wisdom, Akshobhya is one of the five Transcendent Wisdom Buddhas in esoteric Buddhism. This illuminating copper gilt bronze Akshobhya is a well-cast statue with Tibetan elements and Katmandu Buddhist art traditions; he is seated in dhyanasana on a lotus throne, wearing a traditional sanghati with patches of finely embossed floral motifs, his right hand in bhumisparsa mudra, left in dhyana holding a medicine bowl, his face shown in serene, contemplative expression, with downcast almond-shaped eyes and incised eyelids, straight nose, a gentle smile on bow-shaped lips, the hair finely arranged in rows of tiny curls on a domed unisa. Without considering the four characters incised on the copper base plate that attributes the statue to the Ming dynasty Yongle Years (1360 – 1424), the superb casting, intricate details, and aged patinas of this bronze Akshobhya are an early 20th-century rare find.
