This 19th-century bronze has the authentic aesthetic of the Myanmar Mandalay Buddha in earth-pointing meditation. The Buddha is cloaked in a Theravada Sanghati monk robe with graceful contours and flowing symmetry. He is seated with legs crossed in dhyanasana lotus pose, hands in dhyana and bhumisparsa mudras known as ""calling the earth for witness."" The image is the emblem of enlightenment, which portrays the Historical Buddha's conquest of Mara— when Shakyamuni achieved the state of universal consciousness. The youthful Gautama has an oval-shaped face, his hair arranged in an ascetic chignon wrapped in a headband, and shell-inlaid eyes that are downcast in meditation. His austere countenance seems to smolder and glow, highlighting the features and numinous smile of perfect bliss. Close observation reveals a minor loss behind the back of his cranium. The statue's evenly smooth surface is aged to a mellow dark bronze patina beaming with life and spirit.
