A smiling Otafuku, whose name literally means "Many Good Fortune". She is believed to be the Goddess of Luck and the woman who would bring much happiness to a marriage. As recorded by Neil Davey, the provenance of this mask netsuke belong to the Tokyo school in the late 19th century. The formal kenji signature "Sukeyoshi" is a known mask netsuke carver. With the marvelous natural formations, his conceptual insight into the persona of the goddess, boldly carved with handtools marked along with the pronounced wood grains in an effectively compact composition. This is an inspiring netsuke of playfulness and creative mastery.
