A rare Jogyo Bosatsu stands in front of a leaf-shaped mandola with his two hands in the Anjali Blessing Mudra. He has a benign young boy profile, downward cast eyes, and a slight smile, with knees slightly bent in reverence above an elevated lotus pedestal. Beautifully gilded and lacquered, there's a marvel of subtlety in this Bosatsu statue. It's an exceptional find for a Jodo Shu Altar.
Jogyo Bosatsu is the first of the four Bodhisattvas described in the fifteenth chapter of the Lotus Sutra. Nichiren Daishonin (1222–1282), The founder of Pure Land Buddhism Jodo Shu, believes he has fulfilled the mission entrusted to the bodhisattva by Shakyamuni. He refers to his propagating lifelong efforts as the work of the Jogyo Bosatsu 上行菩薩, whose name means Sublime Action, which represents the virtue of the true self.
